Microchipping your pet involves placing a small microchip under your pet's skin by injection. This chip can then be read by a scanner, and serve as an identification for your pet. If you lose your pet, and if she is recovered by your regional animal control, the microchip can help you be reunited with your family member.
Your veterinarian, most likely, stocks one brand of microchip. However, there are currently 5 brands readily available in the U.S., and, if you have a chance to choose, you may want to learn about all of them. AVID and Home Again are currently the most common chip used. Considerations include the frequency at which the microchips are read, and the database where they are stored.
